"One of the female officers went to pull the dog off the man and managed to restrain the pitbull," said Veldhuizen.
She said the owner of the dog was not at home at the time of the incident.
"The dog died after the attack and we are at this stage not sure of the cause of death," added Veldhuizen.
Police at the scene reported that Botha was not the only one to be attacked by the pitbull that day.
"We were informed that the pitbull had attacked a postman earlier in the day in the area," said Veldhuizen'.
