Twenty-two South African students have been sent on a year-long programme in America by the US ambassador to SA.
The students, who were selected from FET colleges around the country, are part of the Community College Initiative in the United States.
Launched last year, the programme gives students who would not be selected for traditional bursary programmes the opportunity to study overseas.
They will be studying electrical engineering, information technology or business administration diplomas in different cities in the United States.
Saying goodbye to the students, US ambassador, Eric Bost, told students to study hard and take advantage of the unique opportunity offered to them.

Cultural attache Mary-Ellen Koenig said the programme was the best way for young people to learn about other countries and cultures.
"This encourages mutual understanding. These young people will be envoys of South Africa," Koenig said.
"It's very exciting," said Sithembile Mthembu who will be studying in Pennsylvania.
"I will come back completely different."
For 23-year-old Tshepo Hlatswayo this is a dream come true. It's the second time he has applied for the programme.
"I feel like I'm the first person walking on the moon," he said. "This is my life's desire."
Although the parents know their children will get homesick they are proud that they have been chosen to study in the US.
"The Community College Initiative Programme provides educational and practical training to participants from South Africa, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and Turkey.
