By Angelique Serrao and Gill Gifford

A dark and stormy sky punctuated by short, sharp storms that unleashed all the anger and might of an electrically charged highveld summer.

This was one way to describe the gloomy day that met Joburgers when they woke up yesterday morning. Others simply referred to the wet conditions as "strange".

Stories of heavy cloud masses that moved over the city in ominous waves were recounted in offices all over the city yesterday, while others told tales of oddly shaped hailstones as big as golf balls.

A man was struck by lightning on his way to work in Dobsonville, Soweto. He died on the scene.

Forecasters at the SA Weather Service thought nothing much of the fury in the skies.

Venetia Magane said the chilly conditions were nothing more than the result of a cold front passing over the city.

"The thunderstorms are what caused this darkness," she said, explaining the eerie greyness hanging over the city.

Magane said there was a 30 percent chance of showers in Gauteng every afternoon this week, with some areas possibly experiencing hail or strong winds.

This article is not about Julius Malema, so why be surprised that there are no other comments?! Hailstones, who cares...just a pity that it wasn't JM who was struck by lightning and killed!
