Rio de Janeiro - A 51-year-old woman gave birth to her own grandchildren in Brazil, media reports said Friday.
Twins Antonio and Victor Gabriel were born Thursday by Caesarean section in the north-eastern city of Recife, reports said. Both the grandmother, who served as a surrogate mother for her daughter, and the babies are doing very well after the first night, the media said citing doctors.
The woman chose to serve as a surrogate mother because her daughter was unable to have children due to problems with her womb. The children were conceived through artificial insemination, using the daughter's eggs.

The grandmother, who has three children of her own as well as another grandson, said she never hesitated.

"I wanted to help my daughter," she said.
Brazilian media showed photographs of the happy, exhausted grandma in bed, with her two grandchildren in her arms. Parents, Claudia and Antonio, stood at their bedside.
"I must thank God that my mother has withstood everything so well, and the little ones are incredibly sweet. Becoming a mother was my greatest dream," said Claudia, 27, with tears in her eyes.
She had tried in vain for four years to get pregnant through artificial insemination.
According to reports, the grandmother will breast-feed the babies for one month. Then Claudia will take over breast-feeding, following a hormone treatment.
"This facilitates the identification of the babies with the mother," a doctor said. - Sapa-dpa
