The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has declared a dispute in their wage negotiations with De Beers Marine, the union said on Friday.
The NUM's chief negotiator, Peter Bailey, said the union was on the verge of signing an agreement with De Beers Marine on Thursday when the company reneged from the agreed allowances.
The NUM then referred the case to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) declaring a dispute with the diamond producer saying it faces possible strike action.
De Beer Marine is involved in deep water diamond mining off the South African coast and the NUM claims to represent up to 90 percent of the company's employees.

"We agreed to a combination of a sea-going allowance, a contract allowance and a meal allowance. We agreed to their R130 though our demand was R150," said Bailey.
He said the company changed the offer when it was time to sign it, and thus he case was referred to the CCMA.
De Beers' spokesperson did not return messages asking for comment on the issue. - Sapa
