A miner died at the Phakisa mine in the Free State on Friday morning, Harmony Gold said.

Spokesperson Marian van der Walt said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death as this was unknown.

Harmony chief executive officer Graham Briggs sent his condolences to the family of the miner.

"The loss of life is tragic and investigations into the incident are under way.

"Safety will continue to receive priority attention at all Harmony's operations," Briggs said. - Sapa
