Academics, business executives, media specialists and lawyers are some of the professionals being considered to serve on the SABC's interim board.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to dissolve the board this week after three years of political pressure and infighting that almost crippled the public broadcaster.

The names of the candidates were revealed on Wednesday when the National Assembly committee on communications met to consider the individuals put forward by various parties for the five-member board.

Businesswoman Irene Charnley, a former MTN executive, was nominated by the ANC.

A senior ANC official privately said the party would consider Charnley to chair the interim board.

Unisa academic Phil Mtimkulu, media expert Libby Lloyd, and advocates Leslie Sedibe and William Mokhare are the other individuals nominated by the ruling party.

ANC MP Eric Kholwane said their candidates had proven track records and could help steer the SABC in the right direction for the next six months until a permanent board was appointed.

COPE nominated Rhodes University academic Guy Berger, former SABC radio head Pippa Green, former auditor-general Shauket Fakie, and academics Mamphela Ramphele and Njabulo Ndebele.

COPE MP Julie Kilian said that although they were throwing in the names for consideration, they still had to consult with their preferred candidates.

Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille suggested analysts Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert, Chris Landsberg and Richard Calland, Absa chief executive Maria Ramos and journalist Max du Preez.

DA MP Lindiwe Mazibuko said her party was to discuss the names of their preferred candidates at their caucus on Wednesday.

Committee chairperson Ismail Vadi said the opposition's candidates, particularly those chosen by Cope, had declined nomination.
