The National Consumer Forum is warning consumers not to spend money unnecessarily on one-day events, but to rather use the money to cover their debts.

Forum spokesman Sbusiso Masilela said over the past two-and-half months sales figures from clothing stores have decreased - a sign that consumers are taking precautionary measures in these tough economic times.

"When it comes to events such as the Vodacom Durban July it will be really beneficial for the consumers to watch that their spending does not go over the limit," he said.

Some of those attending tomorrow's calendar event seem undaunted by the prevailing economic climate, sparing no costs to look fashionable.

While most people are stretching their budgets to afford rising food costs, many believe that overspending in the name of fashion on this one-day event is acceptable.

Part-time phlebotomist, Bongi Mhlongo, said: "I will be spending R2 500 on my dress, R800 on accessories and R500 on shoes, although I have other expenses to attend to, but the July is important.

"This event only comes once a year and I will not spare any costs to look good, even if it is only for one day."

Msizi Ngwenya, 24, said: "I like to spend on these events because I really have to show off and I start saving months in advance for the outfit.

"If other expenses occur they can wait until after the July race because it only comes once a year," he said.
