The ANC needed to shed dead wood for the purposes of renewal, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) said on Wednesday.
This, after former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota "served divorce papers" on the ANC and said he may form a new party.
"Lekota and his mob of power hungry comrades have no God-given right to lead South Africa," said spokesperson Sizwe Pamla.
"During their term of office they were given a mandate by the ANC to lead the people's movement...but they hijacked it and indulged in self-serving endeavours."
He said Lekota's leadership within the party caused unnecessary confusion within the ANC alliance ranks.

"That is why they were democratically voted out of the ANC national leadership in Polokwane."
Pamla said Lekota's "holier than thou attitude" was just for publicity seeking antics.
"The arrogance and scant disregard they have for South Africans is shocking...they somehow believe that people have forgotten that they were victims of their hostile, intolerant and divisive leadership," Pamla said.
The ANC Youth League said last week Lekota was a dying horse aiming his last kicks at the party. - Sapa
