A police investigation has found a security dog responsible for dog dung discovered near Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi's bench in the National Assembly on Thursday.
Inspector Dennis Adriao of the VIP protection unit said on Friday that upon questioning, one of the dog handlers responsible for a security sweep of the National Assembly ahead of the president's budget vote confessed that his dog had indeed deposited the unwelcome package.
"He apparently did try and clean up the mess but obviously missed some," Adriao said, explaining that the policeman responsible felt very embarrassed.
He said the unit had apologised to Buthelezi for any offence it may have caused.

The event unfolded on Thursday afternoon as Buthelezi arrived at his regular bench in the National Assembly shortly after President Thabo Mbeki had started his response.
Buthelezi was about to sit down when Science and Technology Minister Mosibudi Mangena warned him of the dog mess in his foot well.
It was then that widespread consternation was caused in house when the upset Buthelezi went and sat down next to Democratic Alliance MP Sheila Camerer.
To those MPS unaware of the true reason for his "defection", it appeared as if Buthelezi was making a political point by choosing rather to sit next to a DA MP than an ANC MP.
It was only once the house had come to a close that the true reason for the move was made clear. - Sapa
