"I knew I wanted to marry you within 10 seconds of meeting you," I told my new wife on our wedding night. I was standing in the middle of our hotel room wearing her gift to me, a G-string that looked like a tuxedo and played the wedding march every time she pressed the teeny-tiny bow tie.
I noticed her amazing cheekbones first. But though beauty is powerful, a man takes in much more than a woman's babe factor in the first moments of meeting her. Before we've introduced ourselves to you, we've probably already intuited if you're sincere, sexy, sad, happy, outgoing, shy, confident, understanding, patient and, most important, interested.

Here are some of the way-beyond-superficial truths that I have gleaned about women I've known, long before I actually knew them at all.
Men live to be the object of that look 1. We can tell if you're confident
Most guys can quickly spot a confident woman: a firm handshake, a level gaze, a clear, unwavering voice and, of course, eye contact. But sometimes all you have to go on is her voice.
I met my editor at Glamour magazine over the phone. Right after hello, she made a smart-alecky yet not unkind remark at my expense that made me laugh. A woman who can joke with a guy she doesn't know shows a certain fearlessness, and I liked her immediately. I knew straight away that she was a sassy, plainspoken woman and that she understood how to talk to a man. We've gotten along well ever since.
2. We can tell if you're insecure
We were both students when I spotted Ann, or more specifically Ann's delicate ankles strapped into a pair of sexy high-heeled sandals. Seeing me looking, she gave me a "hey-there-big-boy" smile, a slow parting of the lips, her head cocked to one side.
I figured she was simply trying too hard to be all grown-up This, frankly, shocked the hell out of me because she always wore a nice dress – a freakish fashion choice in my circles – had perfectly manicured nails, expertly done makeup and a little too much jewellery.
