Lusaka - Zambia's power company ZESCO is importing electricity from South Africa and Namibia to mitigate blackouts that have hit the country since two local generators failed last week, officials said on Wednesday.

The company is spending $260 000 a day to import 100 megawatts from South Africa and 50 megawatts from Namibia, ZESCO spokesperson Lucy Zimba told reporters, adding that the company was working to restore the normal supply.

Since Saturday last week, Zambia has been experienced extensive blackouts after the utility firm shut down two of its six generators at the Kafue Gorge hydropower station.

The two generators were closed after dead weeds from upstream blocked the power station's water inlet, resulting in the reduced flow of water.
