Harare - President Robert Mugabe said at the weekend that the recent discovery of uranium deposits will allow Zimbabwe to develop its energy supplies, state radio reported on Sunday.
"We recently discovered uranium which is used for many purposes including electricity generation," Mugabe said on Saturday while visiting a school south-west of Harare.
"Uranium also makes nuclear bombs such as those which were used to massacre the Japanese at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That was sad indeed.
"But we will not use it to make bombs but to generate electricity," said Mugabe, whose remarks were aired on state radio.
He did not elaborate on how the uranium could be processed for energy use.

Zimbabwe has two main power stations - one hydro-electric and the other thermal - but these have failed to meet the growing demand for power.
The country supplements its power supplies with imports from South Africa, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In recent years Zimbabwe has been experiencing serious power shortages which the national power company ZESA has blamed on lack of foreign currency to buy spares for generators at one of its power stations.
