Durban - A security guard was mauled by two pitbull terriers who broke though a fence at a Durban house where he was responding to a burglary alarm, paramedics said on Tuesday.
ER24 spokesman Neil Noble said Bethuel Vilakazi had his ear partially ripped off and sustained several bite wounds in the Monday night attack in Durban's Crestholme suburb.
Andre du Preez, a director of Securelink, the security firm where Vilikazi works, said it was the second time in three months that one of the company's employees had been attacked by dogs at that property.
"We have suspended services to the property."
Du Preez said the dogs burst through the gate and mauled Vilakazi on the street side. Guards who were in the car started hooting and alerted a neighbour, who came to help Vilakazi.

The neighbour was also mauled by the dogs and eventually the dogs' owner came out of the property and subdued the dogs before calling the emergency services.
"I believe the owners have had the dogs put down at the Mayville SPCA this morning," said Du Preez.
Vilakazi was admitted to Entabeni on Monday evening and underwent surgery on Tuesday.
Du Preez said eThekwini Metro police had been informed of the attack.
