Thursday night's savage storm has even the Durban Weather Office baffled as to its origin.
A forecaster said the weather office was in the dark, literally, as to why the storm occurred at the time it did.
"We normally experience storms like this in the late afternoon but, for some reason, in the past week we've had two wild and volatile storms occur in the middle of the night. We don't know what the hell is going on," the forecaster said yesterday.
"There are usually three scenarios under which such storms occur, which are generally caused by a convergence between two flows of air, but this does not apply here," he said.

Meanwhile, forecasters said Durban is in for a rather wet and cold weekend with gale force winds later tonight moving along the coast on Sunday.
"There will also be rougher than usual seas and the wind will bring rain with it. Sea swells are expected to reach at least 4m," he said.
A number of Durban residents said the storm was the worst they've ever experienced. One of them, Sean Smith, 25, a lawyer who lives in a Durban beachfront flat, said the windows and doors of his home were vibrating.
"I have never experienced such a storm before. There was definitely something sinister about what took place on Thursday night as it was totally out of the ordinary," he said.
