Harare - Zimbabwean police have arrested 56 opposition activists in the farming town of Shamva on charges of public violence, an opposition lawyer said on Sunday.

"Police in Shamva arrested 56 MDC activists on Thursday," lawyer Alec Muchadehama said.

"Although they were arrested in Shamva, they are being detained at Bindura police station right now on public violence charges against Zanu-PF supporters."

There was no immediate reaction from the police. - Sapa-AFP
