Abuja - Nigeria is "very sad" that it slipped on this year's corruption perception index from 121st to 130th position, Information Minister Dora Akunyili said on Wednesday.

"We feel very sad about it," she told reporters after global corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) on Tuesday rated Nigeria 130th out of 180 countries surveyed, awarding it 2.5 out of a possible 10 points.

"We are going to work hard to ensure that we improve because it is very discomforting that we should go further down the list instead of going up with all the efforts that we are putting in especially in the banking sector," she said.

"A lot has been done in the banking sector to fight corruption... When I saw that rating, I was a little bit surprised," Akunyili added.

"We should be humble about it, to just say that we will work on it and ensure that in future we will come out better."

Since August, eight Nigerian bank directors have been charged with fraud and doling out loans without collateral in one of the worst scandals to hit the sector since a 2006 clean-up exercise that saw 89 banks consolidate into 24. - Sapa-AFP
