Vatican City - Pope Benedict said on Saturday that he was deeply saddened by the murder of an Italian missionary in Kenya's lawless north this week and prayed that the peace and reconciliation he sought would soon come about.
The pope did not, however, comment on the possible motives behind the murder of Bishop Luigi Locati, 77, in the town of Isioli, north of Nairobi.
"The Holy Father was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Bishop Luigi Locati and he extends his heartfelt condolences," said the telegramme sent by the Vatican's secretary of state to the Holy See's ambassador to Kenya.

Locati was attacked on Thursday night as he returned home from a pastoral centre. His death followed a week of clan violence in the lawless Marsabit district near the Ethiopian border in which 75 people were killed.
But there have been mixed opinions over whether the killing of the well-known bishop was connected to the unrest.
Police in Kenya detained two men on Friday for questioning over the murder and recovered 18 rounds of ammunition.
