 Mother dies trying to save her children

A 29-year-old mother threw herself into a burning shack to save the lives of her children, but died with them, Vaal police said on Sunday.

Elizabeth Mthimkulu, four children and five relatives were asleep when an electrical short caused the fire in their shack in Kanana Park, Weiler's Farm, De Deur, at 1.50am on Sunday, said Superintendent Maria Mazibuko.

Grandmother Anna Mthimkulu survived with David Mthimkulu, 35, David Mthimkulu, 16, Johannes Mthimkulu, 15, and Puleng Mthimkulu, 19.

Elizabeth Mthimkulu also made it to safety, but when she discovered her two children were trapped inside with their orphaned cousins, she threw herself back inside in an attempt to save them. All five burnt to death.
