Frankfurt, Germany - Germany's World Cup stars were warned Wednesday to expect to wear bullet-proof vests if they venture away from the team hotel at next year's tournament in South Africa.

The head of Leverkusen-based security firm BaySecur, who look after the the German Football Federation (DFB) and their guests when the national team play away from Germany, says their stars like Michael Ballack must take extra care in South Africa.

BaySecur is one of the firms expected to be employed by the DFB while the team is involved in the tournament which runs from June 11 until July 11 when the final will be held at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium.

"The possibility for the players of moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum," BaySecur's Guenter Schnelle told German magazine Sport-Bild.

'moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum'
"Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for the players."

The German Football Federation (DFB) are already looking to step up security around the team hotel in Pretoria for the World Cup.

Because of high crime rates in the republic, the DFB are taking no risks with security, says their security boss Helmut Spahn, and are looking to recruit 20 extra security guards for the team's stay at their five-star accommodation.

Private bodyguards will protect the players both within and around the Velmore Grande hotel in the South African province of Gauteng.

"We will probably use more personnel than we would normally have," said Spahn, who will spend four days in South Africa next week looking at security arrangements.

"We need to first of all get an idea of what security arrangements are already in place for both the team and the media.

"Then we will decide then whether to improve the security measures or whether they are sufficient."

According to Spahn, there is little chance the DFB will rely only on local security guards in South Africa and Germany's federal police force is already in discussions with the DFB on the issue. - Sapa-AFP

Swapping GREED for GOOD, profit at all costs for sustainability and running of a country's affairs for the common good and not only for the Corporate good is what successful governance and management is all about. Three years before his inauguration, the current Pope, Benedict, prophesied the collapse of the world economy due to rampant, unrealistic materialism and corporate greed. It seems he was spot on. From your attitude, Mr. Gordhan, your appointment as Finance Minister has come from above. May our country and its people be blessed by your Ministry.

Maybe they can issue bullet proof shirts to ALL SOUTH AFRICANS!! That would be fantastic, then we will be able to live a bit again, in stead of being locked up in fear of our roaring crime rate!!!!

MPOFU: Since when did wearing a bullet proof vest to protect yourself make you a racist? Please tell me... what does race have to do with it???
Did you know (of course you didn't): most international insurance brokers specify a bullet proof vest when visiting certain areas in South Africa. They will not cover you with Travel insurance (which you need for a South African visa by the way) without a vest. This is not based on race you numbty, this is based on the statistics of how many people get killed from gunshot wounds in any given country in a year. Statistics are numbers. Numbers are the unbiased truth. Statistics have NOTHING to do with race.

Come on South Africa!!! Wake up and smell the coffee!
If this is how the rest of the world see our country then clearly there is a problem. Its not media hype, it's the truth. I've personally seen it, from both sides of the fence. South Africa is a gorgeous country. We have beautiful land, great people from different cultures and a SERIOUS crime problem.
I am living in England now. Not out of choice, out of necessity. Like many South Africans, my hand was twisted into leaving as I could not find a job. Fair enough! There are many other South Africans who arguably need a job more than me - I hold no resentment. Leaving our shores until I am able to work in my home country is perhaps the sacrifice I have to make. I can't wait to move back to SA one day.
Thinking back, however, I see a different picture. Going to sleep at night, even in a relatively low-crime neighbourhood was always scary what if I wake up with intruders in my house that want to rob and torture my family and I? For ten years I slept with a gun under my pillow, and was attacked 3 times. In England, I leave my windows open during the day; I chat to my friendly neighbours who DON'T have a 12 foot wall around their house. I can walk home from work at night without any weapons, or a care in the world. This is how we should be living in South Africa. Make no mistake, crime is a BIG problem and the police aren't the solution. Education is the solution. Give people the means to earn a living, and they won't need to steal.
