In a bid to win a record fourth Nedbank Golf Challenge, Ernie Els has had a special three-wood made for him by equipment sponsors Callaway for the annual Sun City showpiece beginning on Thursday.

The Big Easy knows how tough the rough can be on the Gary Player Country Club course, especially after good rains as has been the case this summer.

And therefore a three-wood off the tee instead of a driver on some of the tight holes makes sense. Rather sacrifice a bit of distance and make sure the ball is on the fairway, is his reasoning.

"I wanted them to make me up a really strong three-wood, which they've done. I've tried it out and it seems to be working well. It makes a funny clunk when you hit the ball - as these modern high-tech metal woods tend to do. But if you're hitting it sweet and straight, who cares what the shot sounds like."

Els, like compatriot David Frost and Zimbabwe's Nick Price, has won the NGC three ties, but no-one has had four victories to date. And the Big Easy figures he may as well try and set another record in 2007, following his unprecedented seventh triumph in the World Match Play at Wentworth in October.

In a 12-man field as is the case with the NGC, Els knows that he only has to beat 11 other players to lift the title, and the $1,2-million first place cheque that goes with it.

But there are some pretty strong performers among those 11, including tournament rookies Rory Sabbatini and Justin Rose who come off fabulous seasons on the fairways of the world in 2007.

Els' fellow South African "Sabbo" enjoyed his best year yet on the US PGA Tour, winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and earning over $4,7-million over there.

Johannesburg-born Englishman Rose announced his arrival on the world stage by capturing the end-of-season Volvo Masters in Europe which earned him European Tour Order of Merit honours for 2007.
