Durban surfer Warwick Wright is R60 000 richer after his victory in the Quiksilver Goodwave unique one-day invitational surfing contest held in massive surf at New Pier on Wednesday.
Wright, a 21-year-old former DHS boy who was world junior champion two years ago, said: "I never believed it was possible for me to win this classic event as there were so many surfers out there I consider to be better than I am."
He plans to use the prize money as down payment on a house and leaves on Thursday to continue his World Championship Tour campaign at the Van's Hawaii Pro.
Wright got the best of starts in the 30-minute final held in a huge three-metre swell, scoring 6.50 points off his first ride and following that up with an even more spectacular eight-point ride to lead fellow goofy-footer Paul Canning and Sean Holmes of Jeffrey's Bay midway through the heat.

Holmes surpassed Canning later in the heat with the second-best wave score of the heat (7.85) for second place and a R15 000 purse with former Capetonian Damian Fahrenfort fourth.
Wright's victory over Holmes was all the more meritorious considering Holmes had scored a perfect 10 in the quarterfinals to win the heat with Warwick second with a nine-pointer.
Their outstanding performances took them both into the semifinals at the expense of defending champion Simon Nicholson with Holmes again the top-scorer in the semi-finals with a 9.25, Wright also winning his heat.
