The Cats have lodged an official complaint of racism to Sanzar after an alleged incident between Waratahs centre Nathan Grey and Chumani Booi, a black wing.

"The Cats lodged a complaint this morning, but they are still in the process of taking statements from (Conrad) Jantjes and Booi," said South African Rugby Union (Saru) spokesperson Rayaan Adriaanse on Tuesday.

"All procedure must be followed, but the process has begun."

Saru now plans to investigate allegations that Grey insulted the Cats winger, but Adriaanse could not elaborate, citing the sensitivity of the issue.

Saru could also file a complaint with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) over the incident, but Adriaanse could not confirm whether that would actually take place.

The incident came to light when Jantjes, the Cats fullback, said Grey insulted Booi early in the game.

"Within the first five minutes, there was an up and under on Chumani. When he went to ground, I was part of the ruck and I heard Nathan say to Booi: 'Leave the ball you stinking black c**t'," Afrikaans daily newspaper quoted Jantjes.

"I was totally shocked. I don't want to say for one minute that guys do not make rude remarks on the field, but that was a bit over the top," he continued.

Mac Hendricks, the Cats manager, said that the Super 12's regional tournament director, Johan Botes, had received the complaint and would be taking the necessary steps.

"I don't think there is a time frame for this to be resolved, but hopefully it can be cleared up soon," said Hendricks.

The Cats also reportedly took offence to remarks from the Bulls players in round one, but none were as cutting and brutal as that allegedly attributed to Grey.

Grey, a seasoned Wallaby campaigner, is in his final season with the Waratahs, with the robust midfielder leaving Australia for the Kyuden club in Japan next year. - Sapa
