A fast approaching weather system generating strong winds and huge five to six metre waves has been predicted for Cape Town for the next two days prompting the organisers of the 2005 Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing event to put the 14 invited surfers on Amber Alert for the possible running of the contest on Wednesday.

The wind is forecast to drop off during the day and with arguably the best field of specialist big wave surfers in Cape Town for the seventh edition of the event, everyone involved is keen to get out in some sizeable Cape surf and crown another Red Bull BWA champion.

Contest director Gary Linden will be on the Sentinel Mountain at first light on Wednesday in order to visually check the conditions. He and Cape Town big wave legend Jonathan Paarman, who will do a close-up check on the break from an inflatable boat, will be hoping for the wind to weaken early enough in the day to make a decision on whether to give the event the "Green for Go" status.

While the invitees have been enjoying excellent surf all over the Peninsula since the three week waiting period started last Sunday, the swell has not been large enough to surf at Dungeons, the deep-water reef outside Hout Bay that produces the biggest rideable waves on the African continent.

Dungeons does not start breaking until the swell is over three metres but the contest is only given the green light when the swell is consistently five metres or more in height and producing wave faces taller than a three story building. The event requires three hours of competition to determine the winner with the top three competitors in each of the two one-hour semis advancing to the 60 minute final, which will be held approximately half an hour after the second semi is completed. The champion is then announced back on the quayside in Hout Bay harbour. - Sapa
