The South Africa team for the 2006 International Down Syndrome Swimming Championships has been announced.

Nineteen of the country's finest swimmers selected by the South African Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASA-II) have undergone intensive training to prepare for the championships which takes place in Limerick, Ireland, from September 2 to 9.

The South Africa swimmers will be going all out to defend their team title for the third time since 2002 when the first International Down Syndrome Swimming Championships was organised by England. South Africa took 10 swimmers to Reading in England and returned home with the title of "the country with the most points" and many world records behind their name.

Our stars at that competition were Tyrone Rademeyer from Gauteng with five gold awards, Jennifer Higgins (KZN) with four gold awards, Peter Lundy and Greg Steyn also from KZN with one gold award each. The South Africa team not only achieved the most gold awards and world records, but also impressed the other participating countries with their discipline, clothing and joyfulness.

Higgins was the top overall swimmer of the championships
In 2004 South Africa hosted the second Down Syndrome International Swimming Championships in Durban. The communities in KZN and KZN Aquatics were very supportive. Sixty-four swimmers from eight countries competed. South Africa was once again, crowned "the country with the most points". In addition, Jennifer Higgins was the top overall swimmer of the championships, Tyrone Rademeyer finished third and Peter Lundy placed fifth.

With the third championships starting in just over a week's time, the South Africa team has been hard at work. The team will gather in Durban on Friday for a short orientation and training camp and will also participate in the Beavers Gala in Durban from the over the weekend.
