Protesters chase 'oppressor' Pahad away

By Erika de Beer and Hannes de Wet

Protesters chased the Minister in the Presidency, Essop Pahad, away when he turned up to receive a memorandum from them in Sandton on Saturday.

"Get on your horse again, we don't want you on our platform," they shouted at Pahad.

"You are an oppressor."

The group of civil society bodies gathered at the Sandton Convention Centre to protest against the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

This was after they marched about 10km from Alexandra township.

Protest leaders vowed not to leave until President Thabo Mbeki arrived to receive their memorandum.

The group's march ended at a point behind the centre adopted as the Speakers Corner.

A truck carrying large speakers was parked next to a wire barricade embedded in concrete around the centre.

As leaders were addressing the crowd, Pahad climbed onto the truck to accept the document.

After heckling the minister for arriving with a bodyguard, the protest leaders chased a smiling Pahad away.

His bodyguards led him away.

Later though, the marchers dispersed without presenting their memorandum.

They left quietly, leaving behind a sea of litter. - Sapa
