We had heard the restaurant was under new ownership, and curious about any potential changes, we went along recently on a Saturday evening with good friends.

The decor seemed more spartan than I recall, and the walls painted more brightly. Also the tables were more spread out. Certainly plenty of room.

This is a place that has a reputation for fine meals, and is where people go to to spoil themselves, for birthdays or anniversaries.

There are new items on the menu and I see a lunch menu is being promoted.

Our waitron was friendly and opened our wine (corkage R50 a bottle).

The two men inclined towards starting with beers; Windhoek draft (R24) and Kings Block House IPA (R54).

Our thoughts turned to starters. Our friend had the Camembert and fig (R69), the cheese baked with fig syrup and served with rocket, tomato, preserved figs and crisp bread. My wife had the superb tomato mascarpone soup (a special, R55) while I had the starter mussels portion (R69) with an Asian sauce with saké, ginger and garlic. We were all very happy with our choices.

Lemongrass was in demand when it came to our main courses, including a large portion of steamed fresh vegetables (R89) and in my case prawns and noodles. The prawns were a good helping, plump and juicy, and the whole dish worked very well.

My wife had the lemon soy chicken fillets with noodles. The chunks of chicken were tender and full of flavour.

The last main was a fillet with prawns, calamari and mussels in a seafood and chilli sauce, accompanied with a baked potato. It looked fantastic and our friend was a contented fellow.

When it came to deserts, we were slow off the mark and missed out on the famous bread and butter pudding. Instead we shared crème caramel (R45), and berries and ice cream (R55). Both were light and enjoyable.

After the ample helpings we needed something to help the digestion and settled on a Drambuie (R28) and Cointreau (R28). Some also had cappucinos (R20).

Good food and great company made for a fine evening. That in itself made it a special occasion.
