Fans of Spud actor Troye Sivan are still “obsessed” with the South African-born teenager, even after he “came out” about his sexuality, announcing to the world that he’s gay.
“I want you guys to know that I am gay,” said Sivan in a YouTube video, titled Coming Out.
A week after his video was viewed by about one million people it appears that Sivan’s revelation has not had the negative impact on his popularity or “brand” as he had feared it might.
Scores of fans have in the past week showed their support and appreciation to the 18-year-old, commending him for his bravery.
“Spud actor is gay. More power to him,” tweeted Pixie L.
“I’m still obsessed with Troy,” said Leshley Singh. “Gay or not.”
Others have, however, questioned why the actor felt the need to announce his sexuality to the world.
“You don’t hear heterosexual people announcing that they’re straight,” said one fan on Facebook.
“Why should he feel compelled to let everyone know his sexual preference?”
Other girls, however, said they had always suspected that Sivan was gay.
“So Spud is gay… but we knew this already,” said Mitchell King.
Sivan explained that he had told his family he was gay in 2010, and had chosen to let all of his fans know on the third anniversary.
PR guru Yogin Devan of Meropa Communications said while it was natural for his female fans to have a sense of disappointment, his disclosure should not have a negative impact on his career or brand.
“While there might be blurred lines hear and there, most fans are mature enough to distinguish between the star’s real personality and their craft,” he said. - Independent on Saturday
