Durban - An 18-year-old-girl, on holiday in Zululand, was raped in front of her younger brother at Alkantstrand Beach in Richards Bay.
This is the fourth attack at the beach in the last four months.
In the latest attack the two teenagers were walking on the beach early on Saturday morning when two knife-wielding men approached them. The men proceeded to rob the siblings of their belongings, including cellphones, said police spokesman Inspector Mbongeni Mdlalose.
“It was at about 2am when the incident happened. The siblings were walking on the beach, near the car park when they were accosted,” he said.
The brother had tried to put up a fight by grabbing one of the suspect’s knives, but he was quickly overpowered and pinned down on the ground.
“That’s when one of the suspects grabbed her and raped her in full view of her brother,” said Mdlalose.
“They were both highly traumatised.”
A rape and robbery case is being investigated by a team of Richards Bay detectives. No arrests have been made.
“The siblings gave us a description of the men and we’re confident that we should make arrests soon,” said Mdlalose.
He confirmed that this was the fourth attack at the beach in as many months.
Allaying holidaymakers’ fears, Mdlalose said police visibility would be increased at the beach during the festive season.
