An alleged shoplifter at the Gateway shopping centre in uMhlanga, north of Durban, thought he had made the perfect getaway when he outran an overweight security guard.
Running out of a clothing store, stolen pants concealed under his jacket, the man whizzed past the guard, outrunning her down a flight of stairs.
Screaming “someone stop that guy”, the guard was no match for the thief who was galloping about five steps at a time.
Noticing the commotion, three people gave chase and one managed to grab his jacket.
But the shoplifter quickly took it off, causing him to fall flat on his face.
Managing to evade all the security guards and patrons at the busy mall, the thief thought he was home free.
But it turned out to be not the perfect exit he had planned when he ran straight into a clear glass sliding door, banging his head and falling stunned on to his back, with the blue and beige jeans he had allegedly stolen from Mr Price hitting the floor with him.
The incident on Monday evening, which played out like an all-action chase scene from a Hollywood blockbuster, had people at the mall in stitches when the crook was finally apprehended.
Nursing a gash on his forehead, the suspect was led back to the store where the police were alerted.
A patron who witnessed the incident, Innocentia Khuz-wayo, described it as “frightening and hilarious”.
“When he was running down the stairs I didn’t know whether he had a weapon so I was a bit scared, but I had a good chuckle when he banged his head on the glass door,” she said.
“We’ve all banged our heads against clear doors, but the fact that he was trying to escape with stolen items made it too funny for words.”
Gateway’s PR manager Sane Ndlovu confirmed the incident, saying the matter was reported to the police.
Police said a theft case had been opened.
The suspect was expected to appear in court soon. - Independent On Saturday
