Durban - Christmas Day looters stocked up with beer when a lorry carrying the brew, which had apparently been hijacked, landed on its side after going off the N3 in the Midlands.
By mid-morning, when the salvage team blocked traffic on the coast-bound lane between the Nottingham Road and Lions River off-ramps, one or two passersby were still helping themselves to a bottle or two.
“The rest had almost all been cleaned out,” Joburg asset manager Steve Stapylton-Smith, who had been on his way to Hilton for a family Christmas, told The Independent on Saturday.
“Even the guys who were waiting for the road to be cleared tried scaling (what was left),” he said.
On Friday police could not shed any light on the incident but, according to Stapylton-Smith, roadside banter had it that the lorry had been hijacked during the early hours of the morning. – Independent on Saturday
