Fasset, the Seta for Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting and other Financial Services, will be funding a work-readiness programme for unemployed commerce graduates in the second half of the year.
It will be run by Guarantee Trust Corporate Support Services, who have in the past successfully placed more than 3 500 graduates into the accounting profession and commerce.
Applications are now open for the mid-year intake, and the process closes in late June. Applications from rural areas are encouraged.
A tertiary education degree or diploma with Accounts III is what is required.
“No experience” is often a barrier to entry to the profession, but this work-readiness programme deals with this by providing innovative practical experience during the training process, aimed at getting the graduate placed into a professional accounting firm onto a Fasset-registered learnership en route to a professional qualification as an accountant, either through Saipa or Saica.
In Gauteng there are positions available for 210 graduates – 150 in Joburg and 60 in Pretoria. The programme also runs in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein.
The programme has highly effective life skills and technical accounting components. It is an opportunity for accounting graduates to join the programme and gain valuable training and work simulation experience.
The programme provides an exciting new opportunity for the participants to obtain vital experience in the work environment using a unique accounting office simulation program, known as the Virtual Office. Here participants will be exposed to the rigours of being a trainee accountant in an accounting firm.
The accounting office simulation section exposes participants to basic record-keeping, ledger compilation, management accounts, financial statements, working papers, income tax and provisional tax returns, statutory returns and statutory registrations, including VAT, UIF and PAYE.
The trainees will be completely familiar with the above skills, having completed them for different businesses for a 12-month accounting period.
The office simulation process is part of the standard five-month work-readiness programme involving actual communication and other life and office skills.
This is designed to provide graduates with the experience that professional accountants require from applicants. In other words, the trainees will hit the road running on day one.
l Interested graduates can contact Guarantee Trust Corporate Support Services on 011 466 3312 during office hours to apply for entry to the programme. See www.guarantee.co.za for more information and to complete online applications.
