The 2013 edition of The Bursary Register, a handy guide that is published annually to assist prospective students in finding study finance, is now available.
The e-book provides over 200 pages worth of the most up-to-date information available on the various bursaries that are offered for study at SA tertiary institutions.
There are also articles on topical issues such as how to apply for bursaries, how to ensure that your studies will be recognised, information on tertiary education institutions, and how to control the total cost of a study loan.
To clarify any confusion, The Bursary Register kicks off by explaining the difference between scholarships, bursaries and financial assistance.
Scholarships are normally awarded to persons with outstanding academic achievements, do not require the recipient to repay the scholarship money and have no employment conditions attached.
Bursaries, on the other hand, are awarded not only for academic achievement but also on other criteria, including financial need.
Bursaries often require learners to repay the organisation by working for them for a specified period of time.
Financial assistance usually entails a loan that has to be repaid as well as an amount that doesn’t need to be repaid – there are many different financial aid packages, each with its own terms and conditions.
The main thing, however, is the extensive list of bursaries available, the information about the organisations offering the bursaries and the selection criteria.
Bursaries from academic institutions, as well bursaries and grants offered by private organisations, foundations, trusts, municipalities, associations,professional councils, government departments and religious groups, etc, are included.
FET colleges also receive good coverage in The Bursary Register, much in line with the minister of higher education and training’s vision to dramatically increase the number of students at such colleges.
