If you are an artist and I attend your exhibition, you will do well not to listen to either my praise or my criticism.
The same is true of formally trained musicians. I am not qualified to tell you how good or bad your art and music are. Yes, I have an opinion and I can express it, but should you listen? Rather not.
There are many people on the planet who will give you advice, critique your work, and see fit to comment on who you are.
The question is, should you heed what they have to say and accept it?
In most instances, I would say don’t pay attention.
Most of them mean well and do not want to harm you but that still doesn’t make the advice good or something you should take into account.
Once you have set your intentions, done your homework and taken aim at your goals, you don’t want to have to second guess yourself too often.
You really want to consolidate your energy and work towards a positive outcome.
Every time you doubt and re-design your outcomes and future, you dilute your efforts; you reduce your chances of success and deplete your energy in the process.
I am not saying that you shouldn’t consult with others, but there are a few basics to keep in mind when you seek their opinion and advice:
l Are they qualified to give you advice?
l Beware that you don’t simply adopt someone else’s fears.
l Take the good and reject the bad.
l It is your life, not theirs.
l Take responsibility for your actions and your life.
I come from a conservative family and my parents wanted me to have a corporate career because of the stability and security this can offer.
Because they didn’t have it easy in life, they wanted me to have a more financially stable life with a good salary and a pension fund.
If I had followed their advice I would never have written books or accomplished what I have. Yes, I could possibly have followed a different and equally successful career, but I would have missed out on what I consider to be my purpose and what it is that creates meaning for me.
You are responsible for your own life. You are welcome to take advice from anyone but my advice to you will always be to seek advice from your heart and soul before you seek advice from anyone else.
Then gather information from other sources to assist you in being successful.
Then again, you may choose to ignore my advice and this is most definitely your prerogative.
If you do well for yourself, at least this proves that you know what you want in life.
