During the past week, I have spent time with two remarkable friends.
Johan Muller is a miner who I have known since early childhood, and one of the most positive people I have ever met.
Besides the fact that he trains every single day of his life, even after he had a hip replacement due to a mining accident, he gets up at four every morning to go 2km down a gold mine.
He always has a smile on his face, and is constantly grateful for his job and good health.
One Saturday night I invited him to watch a boxing event at Emperor’s Palace, which ended at about 11.30pm.
Johan left at 1am, drove to the mine and started work at 3am.
If we all made an effort to work that little bit harder, as Johan does, it seems to me that we would soon reduce that mountain to a molehill and thereby create more time for family and leisure pursuits.
Last week, I spent time with Thomas Lee, not only a friend but a technological genius.
Thomas lost his leg when he was young and has had a prosthesis ever since.
He has very little sympathy for disabled people who just give up. He works hard, plays hard, has a wife and two children, participates 100 percent in household chores and does all of this with his characteristic lust for life.
There are many people both you and I know who have suffered disability or similar difficulties yet have such a positive mindset that these setbacks almost seem insignificant to them.
We are all challenged by something, be it our economic, physical, mental or social circumstances.
We cannot escape these challenges. Yes, some of us have had a more difficult time than others, but the one thing I have learnt from these friends is that your attitude will determine your wellness or lack thereof.
The moaners and groaners in society never get far. It is the ones who have the courage to conquer challenges and make the best of any situation who make this world a truly great place in which to live.
Tell me about your difficulties, as well as how you have overcome them.
I am looking forward to reading your inspirational words.
