London - Vigorous exercise could protect against psoriasis, according to new research.

The study found that intense workouts for three hours a week reduced the risk of developing the common skin condition by up to 30 percent.

The findings, published in the journal Archives Of Dermatology, are based on more than 800,000 women who took part in a long-term study on nurses’ health in the US.

Those who took part in vigorous activities such as running or aerobics saw a reduction in risk. Gentle jogging, tennis and swimming did not appear to protect against the condition, say the researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where the study was carried out.

Psoriasis affects two percent of Britons, causing red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales. Previous research has shown that exercise may reduce the severity of the disease. - Daily Mail
