London - Over-worked employees are spending too much time at their desks, raising their risk of health problems, experts warn.

Almost 60 percent of workers don’t leave the office at all during the day, researchers found.

Experts from the National Charity Partnership, which carried out the study, said they fear such sedentary habits are contributing to an increase in Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

The study revealed excuses for not moving included heavy workloads, mentioned by 32 percent of those surveyed, workplace culture (14 percent) and stress (13 percent). Half have never used their lunch break to leave the office and 24 percent of workers regularly work through their break. Just five percent use it to do something active.

The NCP, a collaboration between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and Tesco, is encouraging people to set simple goals to become more active.

Babs Evans, the NCP’s head of prevention, said: “People who are under too much pressure at work are more likely to eat unhealthily and be less active – or stop altogether.”

Being active is an effective way to reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, she said.
