me studies have suggested that diet soda lovers could face higher risks of diabetes and heart disease.
London - Ditching sugar-laden drinks and switching to either slim-line versions or water can help people shed up to five percent of their body weight in just six months.
Researchers have claimed that the simple substitution by those trying to lose weight will see them shift a minimum of five pounds.
Their study, due to appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared weight loss for 318 overweight or obese people.
Those who were switched to calorie-free beverages were twice as likely to lose five percent or more of their body weight than those who were not advised to change their sugary drinks.
Professor Deborah Tate, author of the study which was carried out at the University of North Carolina, said: “Substituting non-calorie beverages - whether it’s water, diet soft drinks or something else - can be a clear and simple change for people who want to lose weight.
“Beverages may be ideal targets, but the strategy will only work if the person doesn’t make up for the lost calories some other way.
“If this were done on a large scale, it could significantly reduce the increasing public health problem of obesity.” - Daily Mail
