London - If you plan to give up coffee in the new year believing it is bad for you, you might be wise to think again, research suggests.

“One of the first things people give up on a health kick is coffee, and that’s a crazy thing to do because there’s evidence of health benefits,” said Professor Clare Collins of the Dietitians Association of Australia.

Her review of research on the topic concluded that coffee drinkers have lower odds of developing liver cancer and of dying unexpectedly. They are also at lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Professor Collins told the Australian Good Food magazine that coffee speeds up “biochemical processes related to fixing damage in cells’.

Research also suggests caffeine helps protect the brain against Parkinson’s disease.

However, coffee is not recommended for those with conditions in which a short-term rise in heart rate and blood pressure might stress the heart, and children are advised against drinking it until their teens.
