London - You don’t have to go for a gruelling run to work off that chocolate bar — there are many other ways of burning calories. Here are some to try:

100 calories (one scoop of ice cream, a medium banana or a small glass white wine)

* Kiss someone passionately for 80 minutes. Or make love for ten minutes — the increased blood flow burn calories quickly.

* Give someone a 20-minute massage, kneading hard to activate your arm muscles;

* Play frisbee with your children for an hour and ten minutes.

250 calories (one Twix, two bags of Monster Munch or 13 satsumas)

* Make beds for 90 minutes. This is good news if you work in a hospital or run a B&B, tricky if you don’t.

* Go to sleep for five-and-a-half hours. The body burns calories during rest to help repair muscle tissue and regulate and produce hormones. This is thought to be one of the reasons why weight gain can be associated with people who get by on little sleep.

500 calories (One McDonald’s Big Mac, or a generous egg and salad sandwich, or four 120g low-fat fruit yoghurts)

* Wash cars for two hours - this is good news for your waistline.

* Rake the lawn and plant bulbs for an hour-and-three-quarters.

* Watch TV for eight-and-a-half hours - that’s the entirety of Poldark, or The Night Manager with two extra hours spare for something else. Being sedentary burns calories, but at a much slower rate. However, stand up to watch TV and you’ll burn an extra 50 calories an hour.

1 000 calories (almost a whole tube of Pringles or a large pizza)

* Try decorating for two-and-a-half hours.

* Go supermarket shopping for four-and-three-quarter hours — filling your trolley with healthy, low-calorie food, obviously.

* Queue for ten-and-a-half hours. Visiting a theme park might be the answer, because standing in line is thought to push up the body’s fat-burning rate.

2 000 calories (a Burger King Bacon Double Whopper with 12 onion rings and a vanilla shake or four Long Island iced tea cocktails)

* Mow the lawn for six hours.

* Go disco dancing for five hours.
