Breast-feeding may be natural, but it does not come easily to everyone.

It is an art and a learnt skill – and for first-time moms and their babies, it is new to both.

In modern society, says the author, who had her own struggles to establish breast-feeding and went on to feed five babies, it has become practically a lost – or concealed – skill.

The benefits of breast-feeding are well documented and it is encouraged by maternity units. More than 90 percent of mothers breast-feed in hospital, but things go wrong, they get discouraged and six weeks later, breast-feeding mothers are in the minority.

This user-friendly book starts each chapter with top 10 tips and deals with issues like the mechanics of breast-feeding, preventing and solving problems, the early days at home, how to continue when you return to work, nursing an older baby, when to wean and breast-feeding in special circumstances (premature babies, Down Syndrome, babies with medical problems, twins and even adopted babies).

There are also testimonials from mothers who have had their struggles and overcame them, plus a list of recommended reading and lactation consultants.

A useful book for new moms. – Daily News
