Cape Town - A clinic is offering mothers who no longer want their babies a safe and anonymous way of handing over their little ones.

The Baby Safe is a non-profit organisation that has a unique way of getting moms to drop off their babies instead of dumping them.

“The safe itself is a mechanical box created by an engineer,” says the organisation’s Danielle Thomson.

“Once a baby is placed inside on the mattress, it magnetically seals shut and then through an installed sim card, it calls our on-call phone and two staff members immediately.

“We then fetch the baby within three minutes.”

They then facilitate adoptions for the children.

Since the instalment of Baby Safe in 2008, the organisation has received five babies through the safe.

And they have intervened and helped with six babies abandoned outside the safe.

“It provides a safe and anonymous alternative to dumping,” she says.

“Baby Safe also networks with existing groups in high-risk areas, training and equipping them to install and manage their own baby safes.”
