One of the latest treatments for insomnia is based on deep breathing techniques.

Slow, deep breathing is thought to reduce the heart rate and the release of stress hormones, triggering relaxation.

The new device, which is being trialed at the Sheba Medical Centre in Israel, consists of a sensor worn on a strap around the chest, which records the patient’s normal breathing rate.

A control module (like a CD player) then emits musical notes to prompt the wearer to breathe and exhale, at a gradually reduced rate, helping them to drop off to sleep.
