Durban - The National Autism Association recently shared a heart felt poem written by a 10-year-old boy after his mother shared his work to their Facebook page.

The mother writes: “My 10 year old son with Aspergers syndrome (a form of Autism) was asked to write a poem for school titled 'I am' he was given the first two words in every sentence.”

Benjamin Giroux and his fellow classmates were given a class assignment to write a poem titled “I am” in celebration of National Poetry Month.

Giroux who attends Cumberland Head Elementary writes: “I am odd, I am new. I wonder if you are too.”

He continues, “I hear voices in the air. I see you don’t, and that’s not fair.”

The poem has gone viral and has garnered close to 30 000 shares and 34 000 reactions.

Thousands were touched by the moving poem which gives a glimpse into Giroux’s life.

Sue Van De Berghe commented saying: “Benjamin you are amazing. I believe everyone of us can truthfully say “I am odd, I am new”.

Teya Naah said: “I'm speechless and in tears. Thank you Benjamin, you have spoken for my son as well.”

Gary Valente said: “We are all odd, Benjamin, in our own way. It makes the world interesting. And you fit in just fine.”
