Schools across South Africa break for the mid-term holidays tomorrow, which means millions of teens will have to find creative ways to pass the time.
Inevitably, they’ll get bored, and hell hath no fury like a bored adolescent.
Here are five awesomely entertaining shows for teens to get stuck into over the holidays.

1. The Big Bang Theory (FPB Rating: 13PG)
For those who slay the tough subjects of science, math and biology – The Big Bang Theory confirms that smart is the new sexy, and nerds are actually the coolest people around.
This hilarious sitcom features Leonard and Sheldon, two freakishly intelligent academics who don't quite know how to deal with their new neighbour, a beautiful aspiring actress, Penny.
The show revolves around Leonard, Sheldon and their equally socially awkward friends, Wolowitz and Koothrappali.
For years, this geeky crew has been happily hanging out watching Star Wars and visiting comic book stores, but the arrival of Penny in their lives changes everything.
2. WWII Lost Films (FPB Rating: 13V)
This documentary series contains rare footage of World War II that took the producers two years of exhaustive searching to find. Much of it has never been aired before and the footage has been digitally re-mastered in colour and high definition.
The series showcases the key battles, atrocities, and turning points of the Second World War that collectively had a profound impact on today’s society.
For history lovers, this is a brilliant show that captures the horrors, the hope and the hardships of global conflict. And if this is part of your curriculum, it’s an awesome way to study the material.
3. Once Upon A Time (FPB Rating: 10V)
You’ll see familiar characters from your childhood in this more grown-up version of a fairytale with a twist.
Welcome to Storybrooke, Maine, USA, controlled by the Evil Queen Regina, who is the town’s mayor. She put a curse on the town 28 years ago, and the characters have no memory of their fairytale existence or that they haven’t aged in three decades.
But a woman called Emma Swan (Ginnifer Goodwin) might be able to release them from Regina’s rule. The daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, she landed in the real world as a baby, and her son’s book of fairytales is the key to their freedom.
4. Shaka Zulu (FPB Rating: 13NV)
King Shaka of the Zulus is a name known to all South Africans. But the story behind his brutal rise to power, less so.
This sensational 10-hour mini-series focuses on King Shaka’s quest to unite the scattered and divided tribes of the KwaZulu Natal region. Shaka was one of Africa’s most revered military tacticians who revolutionised African warfare with strategies never seen before on the battlefield.
Under his reign, he built the biggest fighting force that Africa has ever seen.
5. Secret Life of The American Teenager (FPB Rating: 13S)
A tough reality faced by many teens across South Africa is unplanned pregnancy. This series showcases how it can change your life forever and the impact teen pregnancy can have on relationships between family and friends.
The show follows the fictitious story of Amy Juergens, a typical teenager. She meets a handsome boy at band camp, starts dating another boy, and then finds out that she’s pregnant.
Amy thinks her life is over, but her boyfriend Ben declares that he is deeply in love with her, and wants to marry her. Even though the baby isn’t his. But when the baby is born, things change.
