London - What planet do we live on? How many sides does a triangle have?

They sound like basic questions – but it seems they are too much for some children.

One in ten does not know we live on Earth, and the same proportion cannot say how many sides there are on a triangle, a study found.

Yet young people were quick to spot celebrities and TV characters. Nine out of ten knew TV personality Mr Tumble and eight out of ten picked out mogul Simon Cowell.

One in ten did not know how many sides a square has – and a few said they lived on Saturn or Mars.

The poll of 500 children aged six to ten found that two-thirds knew the national anthem, while more than half could identify the theme tune to children’s show ZingZillas.

The study was carried out for Alton Towers Resort. Its CBeebies Land, based on the BBC children’s station, will open on May 24. - Daily Mail
