Johannesburg - Struggling to find something to give your dad this Father’s Day? Then a survey conducted by Pick n Pay of more than 900 shoppers should help.

Asked to recall some of the best gifts they had given their fathers in the past, the ideas of customers ranged dramatically from “a big hug”, biltong and aftershave to cellphones, tickets to music concerts, golf clubs, an iPad and even a brand new car or an heir.

Other winners included a watch, a surprise visit from a son overseas, a bottle of good wine, a weekend away, a homemade card from children just learning to write, a poem and a Springbok scarf.

When dads were asked what they really wanted for Father’s Day this year, the overwhelming desire was simply time with the family.

Other items on their wish lists were gas braais, power tools, whisky, peace and quiet, obedient children, an iPhone, and repairs to the house.

Fathers nominated the old standby of soap-on-a-rope as the worst gift they had been given for Father’s Day.

Other distastrous presents included socks, ties, a mug, underpants, flowers, a nose hair trimmer, a spade, foot powder, an embarrassingly small T-shirt, a toothbrush and a 2l bottle of Coke.

The greatest possible offence was not remembering the day.

The poll also asked shoppers what they would do if they remembered Father’s Day only the day before. Most people said they would buy dad a six-pack and biltong. A hastily arranged family braai was also a popular idea.

Most respondents, 89 percent, believed that Father’s Day is a great way to celebrate fatherhood.
