London - It's the last thing you need when you’re trying to work up an appetite.

This almighty spider appeared on one couple’s back door as they cooked a meal. Lauren Ansell posted a photo of the dinner plate-sized huntsman spider when it appeared at their property in Mount Coolum in Queensland.

Although Australians are pretty used to brushes with spiders, this monster was bigger than usual. Ansell said the arachnid became agitated after they closed the door and cut off two of its legs.

She said: "It’s massive and was mean. My boyfriend tried to squish it in the door but the spider was smart. The door only claimed two of its legs and it dropped and ran into the garden."

She said she had nicknamed the creepy-crawlie Aragog – after the giant, flesh-eating spider in the Harry Potter books.

Male huntsman spiders can reach a leg span of up to 12 inches and their toxic bite can cause painful swelling.
