London - Eating cheese before bedtime does affect the quality of sleep and the content of dreams, according to a new study - but it doesn’t always cause nightmares.

Eating Somerset brie will make you drop off quickly and results in abstract dreams about love. Red Leicester promotes vivid dreams, while Wensleydale and Stilton will make you sleep more deeply. Cheddar stops you dreaming completely, according to research at Middlesex University.

Students ate five different British cheeses before bed and just six dreams out of 156 were nightmares.
