Ingredients: Raspberry puree, mint leaves, lemon-lime juice, lemonade.
Revisiting mocktails brought me to the mojito-influenced Raspberry Mosquito at 169 this week.
The fizzy non-alcoholic drink is a good option on a night out, when you are not quite up to liquor, or if you’re a teetotaller.
Barman Jay Chiwala makes the drink by shaking two shots of ice raspberry puree, with a shot of lemon-lime juice and eight mint leaves.
This is strained into a glass and topped with 50ml of lemonade and garnished with lemon.
Don’t expect a Sparberry taste. The slight fizziness from the lemonade adds a fun texture to the long drink. Stir in the lemonade to spread the fizz. Note that it is very sweet. The pink drink is definitely elevated by the mint leaves. It is a creative take on a traditional mojito.
Owner Gerald Davids says 169 is Cuban influenced. That makes sense seeing that the establishment was taken over from Cape to Cuba.
The establishment runs a nightclub upstairs on Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm, targeting 18 to 35-year-olds.
There is a restaurant that serves a mix of South American food and sushi.
Smoking is at the cigar bar upstairs and the cocktail bar downstairs.
It is open from Mondays to Thursdays from 9am to 1am, Fridays from 9am to 4am and Sundays from noon to 4am.
Happy hour is from 5pm to 7pm, with cocktails around half price.– Weekend Argus
